Build Bookcase Wall
Place the hanging strip between the top supports flush with their tops and back edges.
Build bookcase wall. This built in bookcases project is made from hardwood plywood 2x6s hardwood boards and standard moldings available at home centers and lumberyards. Make sure the cuts are performed properly without damaging the edges. Therefore you could either use 4 long boards without cutting them or adjust 5 long boards to 50. I left 1 1 2 in between each bookcase.
Start by affixing the top to the two side panels using wood glue and finish nails image 1. This free bookshelf plan will build you a large cubby bookshelf with adjustable shelves. I put scraps of 2 4 in between to maintain even spacing. Then install the shelves by putting glue in the rabbet joints and sliding the shelves into the joints one shelf at a time image 2.
We chose birch boards and plywood along with maple moldings and then used a gel stain to give the project a cherry wood appearance four our built in bookcases. Although you could put this anywhere in your home it would look great in a kids room along with a custom toy box bunk bed and desk. To help you build this bookshelf there is a free video tutorial and photos of user submitted finished bookshelves. Simply screwing it to wall studs is one good solution.
With the shelves in place add finish nails through the outside of the unit to hold the shelves in place image 3. Cut the rail from a 1 x 3 or 1 x 4 to fit between the two case sides. Cut it to length 1 inches shorter than the shelves. Use shims under or behind the bookcases to ensure each bookcase is level and plumb before securing it to the wall.
To make the hanging strip that attaches the bookcase to the wall rip a 2 inch wide piece of plywood. Since the bookcase has no back you need to install a wood strip or hanging rail to screw each case to the wall. Secure your bookcases to the wall studs through the cleats you installed at the back of the bookcases. If you choose that method load up the bookcase with books so it fully compresses the carpet before you drive the screws.
Lay the two legs on their back edges supports facing each other. Attach the support to the legs using glue and several 1 1 4 finishing nails. If you want to be able to move the bookcase without removing screws pick up a couple of chain latches.
